Manwaring Family Gets Fit

I think I've worked out a fun program for us all to participate in and hopefully we can become more healthy in the process! It is based on a point system. To join in on the program, everyone contributes $10. (Let me know if you REALLY can't do this and we'll work something out. I don't want the $10 to keep anyone who wants to participate from doing so.) The idea is that the person who receives the most points by the deadline that we choose, will receive all the money. If everyone as well as their spouses, fiances, & boyfriends choose to participate, that's $110 for the winner!

Here's how to earn points:
-Physical Activity: 2 points per 10 minutes up to 1 hour per day.
-Fruits and Vegetables: 1 point per fruit or vegetable up to 7 per day.
-Stress Management: 2 points each day you participate in 10 minutes of stress management activity.
-Weekly Challenge: We will take turns coming up with and posting a weekly challenge for all to participate in. If you complete the weeks challenge, you get an additional 10 points that week.

Keep track of your points on your own and you can post them each week under your picture on the sidebar of this blog. Does this sound ok to everyone? Is there anything you would change? How long does everyone want to do this, or in other words, when should our deadline be? I'd like to begin this coming week on March 14th. Any objections?

  1. I'm think it sounds good. Because most individual goals are wedding related, maybe we could do this for 9 weeks (March 14th - May 15th) I think we should define "Stress Management" a little better(does watching TV count? Eating ice cream? I think I have that one down!)

  2. I like it! And yes, what is stress management? I manage mine by zoning out into other people's problems (Biggest Looser, Lost, 24, American Idol).....aka evening TV!
I am ready to start and 9 weeks is good for me!

  3. Maybe we could help define stress management by putting a time limit on it. I think if we indulge ourselves in "stress-relieving" activities...like tv or video games...for more than say an hour in one evening then it becomes zoning out, unwinding/relaxing, et cetera rather than actually focusing on reducing our stress. So an activity may count as stress relieving maybe if we spend no more than 30 minutes or 1 hour (you vote) doing it, but if it goes longer than that it's stopped being stress management and the points get taken away. What do you think?

And in response to eating ice cream...I think all the psychology majors and non-psychology majors alike know that while that's enjoyable, eating anything (especially junk food) is considered unhealthy when used as a coping mechanism. So I also think maybe that any activity which promotes unhealthy behavior shouldn't count.

Maybe that second definition is better than the first idea... What do you think everyone? Any better ideas?

  4. Really, the reason I put stress management on there is because I thought it was something that might appeal more to Josh and Meisha. Not that they need stress management, just that things that might interest them could fall into that category. Such as massages with oils, meditation, etc. Really just taking time out of your day for you to de-stress. I don't think watching tv, eating junk food should count. They could arguably be bad for you. I don't think anyone could argue that a massage could be bad for you.
Just go on your own honor. I would feel guilty about giving myself points for eating ice cream, but if you feel no guilt in that then go right ahead. Basically this program is to help everyone improve their lifestyles and feel good about themselves. Good luck! We start today! :)

  5. So since you started this thing, Savannah, I think you should pick this week's "Weekly Challenge". Chris seconds that motion. ;) What's our special challenge this week?
