A little help, please.

If any of you didn't know, I'm trying to delve into the world of web design. I've got a business name and a website, now I need some feedback. Let me know what you think about the logos and taglines below. Any design tips or feedback would be much appreciated. And it's OK to be as critical as you want. I just want honest feedback.

You can see one of my finished sites HERE and one of the ones I'm working on HERE. You might recognize the owners of the second site =)

If you're curious, my website is www.desigmotion.com. Check it out if you'd like. It's pretty much just a temporary contact page for now. I'll get the real site up as soon as I get caught up on the other sites I'm doing.

Thanks.

  1. I think it's great you're getting into web design. I really like your logos. I prefer the second tagline because it makes it more clear what you do. As for the logo, I think it depends on who you'd like to appeal to. I think the top one is more "cool", but I think the bottom one would appeal to more people. The top one makes me think of trucks and mechanics, where the bottom could be more universal. I hope that made sense and is somewhat helpful. Good luck! :)

  2. Thanks for the feedback! It definitely helps. Nadya gave me just about the same advice, so it helps to hear someone else thinking the same way.

I think it's funny because before I posted on Blogger, I've just asked car guys and car guys seem to like the "mechanical" logo better. I'm glad I have people outside of the car business that can give advice. =)

  3. Hey, this is Rachel, I'm not on the blog yet so I'm anonymous, but I'd have to agree with Savannah and Nadya. I really like the top one a lot and think you've done a really good job with it. But the bottom one may draw more customers. Good for you Josh!! :D

  4. You should probably post the newer versions now, or have you updated it on your website?

  5. I like this one the most... ...the black small one ...the one without the gear. How do you say your logo? Desig motion OR Design motion? I am really impressed with your other web designs.

  6. Mom- It's pronounced "desig motion". I did a lot of searching for names and web addresses. "designmotion.com" and "design-motion.com" and a whole bunch of others were already taken, so I decided to get a little creative and combine the two. I guess we'll see if anyone really gets it. Sometimes things seem to make a lot more sense in my head than other people's.

  7. I like the combo idea. I thought it was for sure "desig motion" when i first looked at it. It wasn't until I noticed how you split the "M" with the white part looking like an "N" that i thought what mom thought, that it might be pronounced "design motion." I agree with everyone's comments about the wider audience appeal of the second logo. Nice work. :)

  8. Hey Josh, it's your cousin Scott here. I think you're off to a great start.

From my experience, you do have to be careful with names, and especially with domain names. As creative as an idea may seem in your head (as you mentioned) it doesn't always translate well to the general public. Instead they think it's a typo, or they just never remember what it is and go to everything else they can type that is similar. It all depends on how you market yourself. If you create a really good brand and can get it stuck in people's heads then it can work.

Another trick is to have multiple domains, and then you can choose to use another one that maybe incorporates a tag line or something that is easier to remember so that when people see the URL in print, they remember. That doesn't mean it's any easier to come up with a good one, let alone one that isn't taken yet.

Anyway...more than happy to answer any questions or give feedback. I've been doing this web thing for years and can publicly admit that I'm addicted to buying domain names. Generally ones that tie to an idea I have that I end up never making happen =) (I think I'm sitting around 25 at the moment, though many have come and gone over the years).
